Restaurant review: Le Paradis – Bijou in the Annex

Le Paradis

Toronto Annex le Paradis restaurant
Le Paradis is the name of a charming Toronto bistro, nestled in a quiet niche of the elusive Annex area. A fitting name for a place so hidden and so delightful. Walking through the doors, one immediately felt transported to a petite brasserie in France. The checkered floors, the dim lighting, and the modest art warmed me up immediately and I felt welcome before the hostess came to receive us. I expected a pretentious crowd when I made reservations, and I was surprised to find a hearty set of people both working at le Paradis and among the patrons too. We were lead to a darling little table amongst the quaint arrangement of the restaurant, right next to a beautifully racked wine cabinet.
The menu was tastefully designed and easy on the pocket, offering little treasures of French cuisine. The wine selection was lovely, and also very affordable. We waited for our appetizer sipping delicious wine and eating exquisite French bread. A charming waiter, the kind you tip generously for existing, was pleased to serve us this evening. We ordered a three course meal; we began our dinner with Morbier cheese with grilled vegetables. I went on to beef braised in red wine while my companion enjoyed chicken served with an array of mushrooms cooked delectably to melt in your mouth. We ended our meal with a perfect caramel custard and European expresso. This was the kind of restaurant that turns in to a second home; it can be compared to the wine left to age in the cellar the day you were born- the kind you’re meant to save for a special occasion. When you finally taste it, you know it is more familiar to you then anything you have ever drunk before - Le Paradis is a gem.
If you are looking for an unpretentious place to unwind with old friends and good wine, a place to take your children when they visit, or a location for a tryst, Le Paradis is the ideal place.

Elli. You must check out Didier on Yonge, about half a block North of St.Clair. It’s French and it’s the best in Toronto. At least from my experience. Here’s a direct link to the menu: http://www.restaurantdidier.com/site/menu.php
