Ontario Employment in January

Moving the right way by John Millar
After all the pessimistic news we have been hearing about the employment situation in Ontario, here’s something positive! Employment in the province has not been doing great lately in comparison with other areas of Canada. However, in January, Ontario formed about two thirds of the job gain in whole Canada, according to official data.
More than 30,000 positions have been created in the province last month and the unemployment rate stayed at the level of 9.2 percent. Since July 2009, the number of employed persons in Ontario has increased by 51,000 and we can hopefully expect even more increases in the near future. Unfortunately, though, the vast majority of created jobs is part-time.
Great January numbers for Ontario, I’m glad. We needed this. The employment situation seems to be moving the right way, which is great. With a bit of luck, the February numbers will be even better and not only part-time jobs will be created.
