Second Homes

By , June 13, 2010

Second homes or vacation homes have become quite trendy and usual over the past couple of years. I am quite sure that, if it is not you, you know of someone who owns a home used just for holidays, weekends and relaxation. However, after purchasing the property, many people suddenly find it is useless (or not used as much as they expected) and realize it may cost them more than they predicted and so on. Simply, many are not quite satisfied with the home. In this article, I want to offer you some tips on what to avoid and how to enjoy your second home as much as possible.

First of all, try to realistically think about whether you really need the house, if so, why and for how long. It is nice to think that you will spend a lot of time there, for the rest of your life, but usually it is not like that at all. As people are getting older, their preferences and needs are changing quite drastically. For instance, if you can afford to take care of a home when you are 30, it does not mean you will be able to do so at the age of 60. Think it through properly. If you are convinced you are not going to use the place for a long period, it might be better to rent it than to buy it.

Financial matters are another big issue. Do not forget that even though it is just a second home, you have the same responsibilities as your main home – you have to pay for it just like you have to for your first home, perhaps take a loan from a bank etc. Also, since second homes are often located near the beach or in the mountains, they may be more susceptible to problems than houses in the city. Insurance, sometimes very expensive, is thus very important. Briefly put, responsibly consider whether you can actually afford a second home. If you know you do not have enough money yourself, it probably wouldn’t be wise to borrow from your family or acquaintances. Seriously, owing money to someone is not pleasant, especially as second homes are not an essential purchase.

Even though second homes are not unpopular, many people do not think about the realities of owning them, which may lead to disappointment shortly after the purchase. Hopefully the tips offered in this article will help, in some way, prevent dissatisfaction with your weekend home. If you own a second home and want to share your story, just leave a comment. I will gladly read it.
