April 2010 was not a really successful month for Canadian sellers! Statistics Canada has announced this week that purchasing by consumers in our country fell. Sales declined in slightly more than a half of the groups, 11 out of 21.
The most significant decline, one of 4.7 percent, was recorded in sales of new cars and pickup trucks. Clothing sellers will not have been very satisfied in April either, as their sales were 1.7 percent down for overall retail sales. Non-durable goods dropped by 1.2 percent and falls of 0.3 percent were recorded in manufacturing. However, there were a few rises in April. Wholesale trade, for instance, increased by 0.6 percent and durable goods manufacturing rose 0.4 percent.
Nevertheless, our GDP did not increase, which is actually is quite unexpected. No huge rises were predicted but a slight one was certainly was anticipated. This is not the worst possible result; it could have fallen, but it is still not good news.
