Toronto has a new nickname! Some time ago Eye Weekly decided to hold a contest to find the perfect new name for our city. After a few weeks of receiving suggestions from their readers the Eye Weekly staff chose the best 30 from more than 500 entries. A panel of judges then got together and announced the winner — El Toro.

Decelerating Inflation Rate

Canada‘s inflation rate has decelerated in January, according to the data released by Statistics Canada. The pace of the consumer price index increase has fluctuated from 2.4 per cent in December to 2.3 per cent last month. The core inflation rate, leaving out eight volatile items, has slowed from 1.5 per cent to 1.4 per cent.

GTA housing data from mid-February has been published! During the first weeks of this month, 3,084 sales were reported by the Greater Toronto Realtors. Compared to the first half of February 2010, it is a 13 per cent decline — which at the first sight may not seem too good, however it isn’t bad when considering the record breaking past statistics.

Here‘s some more pleasant housing news for you! According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, housing starts increased from 169,000 units recorded in December 2010 to the seasonally adjusted annual rate of 170,400 units this past month.

Surprising Trade Surplus

Here‘s some very positive economic news! The first trade surplus in 10 months was, quite unexpectedly, recorded in Canada in December! The surplus was actually the highest one since October 2008, reaching $3.0 billion, Statistics Canada reported. Just for comparison, in November, there was a (revised) deficit of $115 million. This is quite a change, isn‘t it?

Many call Toronto Canada’s New York and yes; these two cities are somewhat similar. New York City is amazing but it is just a little too fastpaced and concrete-jungle for my taste. In my opinion Toronto is a much better place to live in, I could never quite get used to the hectic atmosphere of NYC. Toronto is also feels very safe to me, when compared to other large cities.

Prices Rose Less than Expected

Good news! New home prices in Canada increased less than expected in the last month of 2010! After the November rise of 0.3 percent, economists predicted a 0.2 percent increase for December, but the New Housing Price Index (NHPI) only went up by 0.1 percent, Statistic Canada said in a statement.

Building Permits Up

The final month of 2010 saw the value of building permits increasing, a first in three months, according to a statement by Statistics Canada. After a considerable drop of 10.5 percent which was recorded in November, permits went up by 2.4 per cent to $5.7 billion in December.

The environment in the GTA has improved over the last few years! Shown in a very interesting report card produced by the Greater Toronto Civic Action Alliance and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. It analyzed the GTA‘s performance in six categories: carbon emissions, land use, water and air quality, waste diversion and biodiversity.

Index of Business Confidence Up

Better times are ahead of us, according to the newly released Index of Business Confidence! It shows that Canadian business leaders' confidence in the economy increased to its highest level in six years during the fourth quarter of 2010. The index went up from 101.9, recorded in the third quarter, to 109.5.

Strong GDP Growth

Good news! A pretty strong economic growth was recorded in our country in November. Canada's gross domestic product went up by 0.4 percent from October, which is its most significant increase since March 2010. From November 2009 the GDP rose by 3 percent, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1.24 trillion, Statistics Canada reported.
