Not-so-bad Demographic Situation
By Elli Davis, May 6, 2011
The birth rate situation in developed countries is quite tragic. According to data recently released by Statistics Canada, in our country, even though the situation is far from ideal, it is not that bad. The fertility rate in Canada is actually higher than in many other parts of the developed world.

In 2008, the number of children born in the country increased for the sixth year in a row. 377,886 live births were recorded, a 2.7 per cent increase from 2007. Rises were seen in the vast majority of territories and provinces with only one exception, the Northwest Territories. Interestingly, the total fertility rate in 2008 was the highest since 1992, at 1.68 children per woman.
Not bad, and the situation seems to be improving. Who knows, maybe in 2020 Canada’s birth rate will finally exceed its mortality rate, and the population will grow even without taking immigration into account.
