Erradicate House Bugs

By , June 22, 2011

So small — and yet they can make our lives so difficult. Yes, I am talking about bugs. Most of us have had, unfortunately, experience with having some kind of insect in our homes. So what can you do to get rid of bugs completely? Undoubtedly, what follows is not a flawless working method, but it is worth a shot.

They say that prevention is the key. Try to keep your home — all  rooms, windows, and anything else that could attract bugs — as clean as possible. For instance, bugs looking for food, such as spiders and cockroaches, will be hopeless if there are no leftovers around the house. You could solve the problem before it even starts this way. Bed bugs might (or might not, it is a tough task, I will come back to it) be destroyed if you wash your sheets regularly and change the mattress often enough, and a similar approach works with other bugs, too.

A big part of prevention is not leaving windows and doors wide open — you never know what might fly in. Window screens are fantastic. If you have failed to prevent bugs from coming in (which is the most common case), let me remind you that certain strong smells put many insects off. Citrus is apparently extremely unattractive to bugs, so you might simply use scented candles. There are plenty of special candles, oils, and even electric tools created for this purpose.

Spraying pesticides is a more radical solution. It is not an easy task, and you should be well prepared if you want to be the leader of the war on bugs. Read the manual first. Rubber gloves and face masks are a must. Unsurprisingly, all human beings and pets should definitely leave the room a few hours after using pesticides.

Overall, it is difficult to give general advice because there are so many types of bugs. It might be best to start from the least drastic options and continue with stronger measures if the gentle approaches do not help. However, it is extremely tough to fight one of the top bug issue in Toronto – bed bugs. In spite of a number of talks and policies, their number in the city keeps increasing. According to a new report by the city’s public health department, bed bug reports increased in 62 of the 95 Toronto neighbourhoods in 2010 compared to 2009. A yearly increase of 38 percent was recorded, which is insanely high. Toronto has been trying to cope with the issue for years.

Not too long ago, the Toronto Bed Bug Project, a Toronto Public Health initiative, was launched to contribute to the solution of the bed bug problem. Toronto citizens are trying to help, too: more and more of them are informing the public health office when they come in contact with bed bugs.

Remember: if nothing seems to work for you and you have almost given up, you can still call professionals to help you. They will gladly do what they can. Luckily for all you busy people, it does not take long for professionals to do their job when helping you erradicate pests. It usually only takes about half an hour — sometimes even less. You can stay home while the work is being done; it should not be dangerous.

The downside is that the cost of the procedure. Of course, it all depends on the specific procedure that is used, the type of bugs that are the problem, and the company you employ to help. Do not be surprised if you have to pay a few hundred dollars. Expect some kind of follow-up treatment, too, as one visit is often not enough.
