Vacation Around Toronto
By Elli Davis, June 13, 2011
In one of my latest articles, I suggested a few interesting vacation destinations all over the Americas. Now I want to share some "great escapes" that are close to home! For those of you who do not live in Toronto, here are some of the reasons to visit the GTA!
Wings of Paradise Butterfly Conservatory

For a day trip I would suggest a visit to the Wings of Paradise Butterfly Conservatory. This beautiful tropical garden in Cambridge is approximately an hour away from Toronto. With about 3,000 live tropical butterflies flying all around you, you’ll feel like you are in a jungle. If butterflies are not enough, you can also enjoy the free-flying birds in the conservatory. It is truly a unique experience!
Wasaga Beach
Why travel far away when you can enjoy beautiful beaches in Ontario? The town of Wasaga Beach is located on Nottawasaga Bay, just 145km north of Toronto. It is the longest freshwater beach in the world though it offers much more. Apart from the white-sand beach, you can enjoy a wide range of activities in the area during the summer such as boating, golfing, and hiking. Love it!
Prince Edward County

Prince Edward County, which is about 130km from Toronto, is a lovely south-eastern Ontario region. If you want to relax and enjoy fresh air, open spaces and clear water — as well as great wine and delicious food, this region offers it all. A number of interesting events are also taking place here in the summertime, including the Jazz Festival or the Music at Port Milford music festival.
Niagara-on-the-Lake
I‘m absolutely sure everybody knows Niagara Falls. But what about Niagara-on-the-lake? It’s a wonderful little town (a National Historic Site) close to the famous falls but far enough from their huge crowds. The town is well-known for its fantastic wineries, so if you want to spend a nice few days breathing in history, enjoying beautiful scenery and wine, this is the right place for you. Once you’re there, don‘t forget to visit Fort George; it’s absolutely wonderful.
Black Creek Pioneer Village

Are you interested in seeing what life was like in Canada in the 19th century? Then spend a fabulous day at the Black Creek Pioneer Village! Thanks to a number of workshops, authentic buildings, gardens, and various historical items, the Village offers a unique view into the past. Furthermore, the restaurant there is very popular for its delicious meals — which is definitely one more reason to visit this magical place.
