Your Home and Pets

Many children dream of owning a pet, maybe a cat or a dog. Parents might not be thrilled about the idea, but to make their loved ones happy, many eventually give in. Have you ever experienced this situation? What are the pros and cons of having a puppy or a kitten?

Busy adults often do not want to have any kind of animals in their homes, especially those that cannot be let outside. The reason is both simple and logical: if parents are at work during the day and the kids are at school, basically nobody would be able to take care of the animals properly during these hours. Children rarely understand that getting a pet — no matter how cute and friendly it is — means a lot of extra work for their parents.

With a dog or a cat, extra time needs to be spent cleaning up their messes to keep your home healthy and tidy. If the animal stays inside most of the time, there will be pet hair everywhere. You can look forward to sand and dirt from outside as well. Pets undoubtedly mean much more cleaning up — especially for people who like to keep their homes particularly clean and fresh.

If this thought does not put you off and you are willing to get a pet, let me give you some advice. Preparing everything before the animal actually becomes a part of your family is very wise — do not overlook these preparations. Write a list of exactly what you need and visit the pet store to get all the necessary items in advance. Ideally, the pet is going to have his or her own place to sleep, but that doesn’t mean he or she can’t sleep in your bed from time to time, depending on your own preferences.

In spite of the negatives we outlined above, there are actually many positives when it comes to owning a pet. First of all, the love you will receive from your little creature can be unbelievably comforting. Animals seem to appreciate kindness much more than people do. I can guarantee you that with a pet (a dog especially), you will never be alone — you will have someone who will love you genuinely and unconditionally.

To me, it seems like one of the biggest advantages of having a dog are the long walks you will take. Walking is very healthy and even relaxing, but without a dog to walk, there may be too little motivation to do it regularly. Having a dog can definitely promote a more active lifestyle. It can change your whole life!

What do you think? Is pet ownership for you?
