There are not many people (in the developed world, at least) who have never heard of the Guinness Book of Records. It is the dream of thousands to be mentioned in this annually updated collection of world records and thereby prove to be exceptionally good at something. Athletes, for instance, are often trying their hardest to not only win but actually break records. It is no different for Canada and some of its citizens. Do you know what are we THE BEST at?

There is something about this time of year that makes many people look at their houses differently, wondering what they could renovate, redecorate, or landscape in the upcoming months. After a few months spent cooped up inside their cozy homes, it is no surprise that the flaws start to become apparent, or maybe they just want to refresh their living space. Either way, if you are one of those people, this year’s National Home Show is the place to go!

Haunted Places in Toronto

I recently heard a story of a woman who is certain that there are ghosts in her home. I found the story of interest and decided to compare the situation with the so-called haunted homes in Toronto. To my surprise, there are many. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, you might find some of the following places pretty exciting. Those who think ghosts exist may be reassured in their belief, and those who do not believe in their existence could find it entertaining at the least.

While Toronto sometimes seems like a super-modern city, old buildings are not so hard to find here. Even though their age is nowhere near that of the oldest buildings in the world, they are worth a visit.

The greatest thing about supermarkets is that they are practical: you can get almost anything you need in a space of a few square metres. Furthermore, plenty of them are open 24/7, so if you are craving ice cream in the middle of the night, you can just go and get some. Many of those who appreciate all of this will, however, agree that when it comes to shopping for groceries, there is nothing better than fresh food markets. Where should you go to experience some of the best markets the world has to offer?

Immigrant Success Awards by TRIEC

One of the things Toronto really prides itself on is its diversity and multicultural values. It does so by supporting immigrants and showing others that their work is worthy of appreciation. There is an institution doing this kind of work called the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC). Annually, TRIEC gives out Immigrant Success Awards, recognizing leadership and innovation in recruiting and retaining skilled immigrants in the Toronto region. Matt Galloway, host of Metro Morning at CBLA-FM, commented on these awards very accurately: “I don’t think you can state it clearly enough. This work is about building the city we want and making sure that the city we are in works for everybody who’s in.”

Toronto – The Most Hated City?

Toronto by Robert Taylor

Once again, Toronto ranked first in a survey regarding Canada’s largest cities by such honourable institutions as the Association of Canadian Studies and the National Capital Commission. Sounds good? Well, maybe there is not so much to celebrate when it comes to this victory. The study found that Toronto is the least liked city in Canada, as about 19 per cent of Canadians marked our hometown in the most hated category.

The Elderly by Felix Abraham

The thought of retirement brings out mixed emotions in most of us. Many people are relieved that they will finally have time to themselves, but on the other hand, leaving work and friends is hard. Your retirement, therefore, should be spent in the best place possible. Do we Canadians even leave our homes when we retire? If so, what are the best destinations?

Toronto Charities: Help People Suffering Abroad

This is the last article from Toronto charities series, but it does not make this kind of charity less important than the ones that have already been covered. It is essential for us, citizens of a country that is relatively well off, to offer a helping hand to those who were not born in such an amazing place and who, no matter how they try, cannot much improve their current situation.

Have you ever heard people complain about how cities are dangerous and will damage your health? During the 2008 Summer Olympics, China had to take drastic measures to purify its urban air. Not only were residents discouraged from driving and factories shut down during this event, there were also air blowers and aircraft working to disperse the smog cover that normally surrounds Beijing. Despite all the efforts, athletes still complained that they had difficulties breathing and could not perform at their best due to the heavily polluted air.
