Just think about it: as unbelievable as it sounds, Christmas is here in less than a month. Why not prepare for the happiest and most anticipated time of the year by visiting one of the world’s best Christmas markets?

Tsukiji Fish Markets by Rory Hyde
The greatest thing about supermarkets is that they are practical: you can get almost anything you need in a space of a few square metres. Furthermore, plenty of them are open 24/7, so if you are craving ice cream in the middle of the night, you can just go and get some. Many of those who appreciate all of this will, however, agree that when it comes to shopping for groceries, there is nothing better than fresh food markets. Where should you go to experience some of the best markets the world has to offer?

One of the things Toronto really prides itself on is its diversity and multicultural values. It does so by supporting immigrants and showing others that their work is worthy of appreciation. There is an institution doing this kind of work called the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC). Annually, TRIEC gives out Immigrant Success Awards, recognizing leadership and innovation in recruiting and retaining skilled immigrants in the Toronto region. Matt Galloway, host of Metro Morning at CBLA-FM, commented on these awards very accurately: “I don’t think you can state it clearly enough. This work is about building the city we want and making sure that the city we are in works for everybody who’s in.”

Once again, Toronto ranked first in a survey regarding Canada’s largest cities by such honourable institutions as the Association of Canadian Studies and the National Capital Commission. Sounds good? Well, maybe there is not so much to celebrate when it comes to this victory. The study found that Toronto is the least liked city in Canada, as about 19 per cent of Canadians marked our hometown in the most hated category.

The thought of retirement brings out mixed emotions in most of us. Many people are relieved that they will finally have time to themselves, but on the other hand, leaving work and friends is hard. Your retirement, therefore, should be spent in the best place possible. Do we Canadians even leave our homes when we retire? If so, what are the best destinations?

This is the last article from Toronto charities series, but it does not make this kind of charity less important than the ones that have already been covered. It is essential for us, citizens of a country that is relatively well off, to offer a helping hand to those who were not born in such an amazing place and who, no matter how they try, cannot much improve their current situation.

In one of my latest articles, I gave you a little insight into Toronto‘s environmental charities. The environment is not the only aspect of life we care about here, however. This city has a wonderful, vibrant cultural life, a large part of which are arts and culture related charities. Take a look at some of them, they might interest those who want to support culture in Toronto.

Toronto is a city full of art. We have an amazing number of theatres, galleries, and museums. Sometimes, especially if the weather is nice, one would like to enjoy art without being closed in a dark building, however. This is easy enough; just attend some of the open-air art exhibitions in Toronto!

Have you ever heard people complain about how cities are dangerous and will damage your health? During the 2008 Summer Olympics, China had to take drastic measures to purify its urban air. Not only were residents discouraged from driving and factories shut down during this event, there were also air blowers and aircraft working to disperse the smog cover that normally surrounds Beijing. Despite all the efforts, athletes still complained that they had difficulties breathing and could not perform at their best due to the heavily polluted air.

As great as Toronto is, the fact is that it is the most expensive city in Canada. Earlier this year, a study by the Mercer consulting firm named it the most expensive in the country. While the housing situation in Toronto has been very pleasant this year, housing is not cheap here either. Luckily, though, Toronto City Council has taken some measures to raise the supply of affordable housing.

Compared to many other North American cities, Toronto can be considered a safe place to live. In 2004, it ranked as the 103rd most dangerous place on the continent. Amazingly, crime in the area has been declining over the years, and in the period between 1998 and 2008, it fell by a fantastic 33 per cent. Of course, crime (in this article, we refer specifically to burglaries) does not avoid our city completely, but it happens to a much lesser extent than in many other Canadian cities.

Calling Woman by Randy Kashka
Life is full of myths. People love to create and spread them. Unsurprisingly, there are many myths surrounding real estate agents as well. Those who have seen American Beauty or other movies that strongly feature a realtor automatically assume that all the agents are like Carolyn Burnham (played by Annette Bening). This is not true, of course. Some of these myths are pretty nasty, too. Let us take a closer look. Which of the famous real estate myths are not quite true?

Sometimes after a long, hot, busy summer day, I wish I could go home, jump in a pool and relax. I am sure you know the feeling, however not everyone has a pool at home. As Torontonians, we are extremely lucky to live in a city situated right on Lake Ontario, which gives us many opportunities to spend the day by the water. So where can we to enjoy the refreshing water in and around Toronto?

Toronto is one of North America’s safest major cities. Living here is a pleasant experience, and many people dream of living in Canada’s largest city. Our beloved hometown, however, has its shady corners as well, and they are the places to be wary about. Let’s see which Toronto neighbourhoods are the safest and which are the most dangerous. Mrs. Brown
Toronto audiences welcomed Mrs. Brown a year ago, but the critics were harsh. This year there is a new show in a new theatre and the results are the same. Although the audience laughed, applauded and gave the cast a standing ovation the critics have been as unkind as before, and I am afraid I am no exception.
