Do you have a closet that you do not need for storage? Here are 4 ways to make creative use of the space:

Closet Workspace

If you live in a condo or a cozy home, it might be hard to find room for all your furniture, let alone a work desk! A closet can provide a quiet private work area. Create a mini office retreat by removing closet doors and putting in a small desk and a few shelves or cabinets. You may opt for a work area that still has plenty of storage, or more of a simple clean space.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Most closets have sliding doors that will need to be removed and replaced with either curtains or doors that open up completely to reveal the room. You may opt to leave the space completely open, but consider how messy the area will be on a daily basis.
  • Standard size work desks might not always work. You can cut a piece of wood to the closet measurements and create a custom work surface. Play around with cabinets or overhead shelving to make the best use of the space.
  • Do not be afraid to go bold! The small contained area is great for playing around with colors and patterns. A coat of bright paint or a luxurious wallpaper in your closet can liven up your entire room.

Laundry Room

A main floor or basement closet can double as a laundry room (provided the closet is wide enough to house a stackable washer/dryer combo). The stacked appliances do not take up too much room and should leave ample storage space, as you can see here.

Broom Closet

Having a closet for all your cleaning products is a great way to keep organized and have everything on hand. Install shelving with small bins to hold bottles and mount hooks to hang towels/rags and keep brooms and mops off the ground. Many items can be hung up on the door, like in this broom closet.

Baby Changing Station

Designing the baby’s room? A closet can make a great changing station while still providing ample space for clothing, linens, and diapers. You can create a cozy nook, like the one pictured here.

Closets can add much needed square footage to any room and there are countless ways to make creative use of the space. If you have any questions about renovating or perhaps you are looking for a bigger place, feel free to call me at 416-960-9995 and I will happily answer any of your questions.
