Tips to make the most of you Condo Balcony
When you live in Toronto, there can be beautiful views from almost every direction you look. To have a condo with a balcony means you can enjoy this view year-round with indoor/outdoor living. But how do you go about making the most of your condo balcony? Here are some handy tips I have picked up along the way.
How Do You Intend To Use Your Balcony?
One of the most important questions you can ask yourself before making the most of your condo balcony is its purpose. Do you want a place where you can enjoy a morning coffee, a place where you can curl up with a good book? Will it be used for entertaining guests? Would you prefer to use the space as a home for a veggie and herb garden? Still yet, would you like to make your balcony an oasis of flowers? In order to make the most of your balcony, you will need to set a specific intention for its use.
Selecting The Right Look
Once you have decided your balcony’s purpose, you will need to determine the best materials for your space. For example, if you value furniture that is easy to move, you might opt for plastic, aluminium, synthetic resin or teak. If you want something that is rustproof you might not want to go for wrought iron. If you live in a wind tunnel, avoid plastic or aluminium furniture, which can easily blow away. My top recommendation for materials that are easy to move, great in all weather, are wind resistant, fade resistant, water resistant and rustproof are synthetic resin or teak. Both of these materials are beautiful but elicit and support very different styles for a balcony. Take your time searching for the right pieces!
Work From The Bottom Up
A standard floor on a balcony is typically concrete. These are cold and generally not the most pleasant surface to walk across. Depending on the level of exposure your balcony has to the elements, you can consider opting for a jute rug or straw mat. A personal favourite floor to add are wooden tiles or composite balcony tiles that look like wood but are sturdier against the elements. Some people prefer having a green space and install artificial grass. If this is your floor of choice, it is important that you do not skimp out. The less expensive the artificial grass, the less realistic it looks and the pricklier it is. You will want something that is comfortable to walk on and looks good for years to come.
Build Compactly
Making the most of your condo balcony often looks like a game of Tetris. If you enjoy doing the Sunday crossword on your balcony but cannot easily fit a table on your balcony, you can purchase a collapsible table that is fixed against your balcony railing. This is especially a great idea if you are working from home, as so many of us are these days, as it gives you one more space to be productive at home.
